We were assigned a task to recreate a Wes Andersen set from any of his movies. I chose “the grand Budapest hotel” and recreated the concierge out of a plethora of mount board, foam board, ticket card, paint, wooden dowels and other miscellaneous materials (including laser cut pigeon holes and lettering ). I’m incredibly proud of the final creation and have learnt loads of skills during the process- including the importance of measuring… and patience ! In this blog post, I will document the project process.
THE BRIEF

Some of the important details of the brief included the importance of practice and measuring, making sure you have done enough research and to ALWAYS have your reference image in front of you when working.
PRE-PROJECT PROCESS
When given the task, the first thing I did was google "Wes Andersen iconic sets". I scrolled through endless images of his breathtaking sets before landing on the concierge. I originally had the old version of the concierge as well as a the new lobby area but ultimately stayed with the former. I made sure to watch the move it was from - The Grand Budapest Hotel- just to see the set in action and to gain a further understanding of the sizing and space use.
PROJECT PROCESS AND ASSEMBLING THE SET

The first thing I did was make a white card model based on the dimensions of an A4 picture (I did not, therefore, google dimensions of the products and then recreate them that way. I went straight in with what I saw on the sheet. I intentionally did this to have a better understanding of how to piece everything together when it came to assembling everything. Doing this was my example of a design proposal and I believe it helped immensely.
The next thing I did was to plan out a schedule that I could follow in order to finish my project on time. I had two college weeks to finish (6 days) and to keep on track, I made sure that all deadlines were achievable and that I did not have too much going on at the same time. I also created a kit list of all the materials that I ended up using.

Overall, I had a lot of fun recreating the set and found I was able to manage my time successfully by following the schedule and staying on track. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. If I had more time, I would have attempted to make the lamps you see on the table as the devil is in the details and I believe they would have finished the project off perfectly.
